In 2014 we designed a unique festival stage for GlobalGathering called The Freight Depot, a large festival arena constructed entirely out of modified shipping containers. The festival stage quickly became one of the most talked about destination areas at the festival.
Our overall brief was to create a range of different festival stage designs on site, each with its own identity. For the Freight Depot our client wanted an industrial inspired look and feel so we chose containers for their ready made qualities. The brief required the design and build of a high capacity arena with a world class sound system and lighting design to complement the stellar line up of DJs and producers gracing the decks across the event. The stage needed to be reusable year on year and easily storable.
To achieve the end result, we modified each of the shipping containers so they could be assembled in a brickwork style stacking formation. We incorporated additional loading points into each unit’s structural design so the weight distribution allowed for them to be stacked on top of each other. Once the outer perimeter was in place, we cut a large aperture in the final container to create a DJ booth which was positioned at the far end of the Freight Depot high above the crowd. The arena drew 1000s of revellers across the event and quickly became one of the most poplar festival stage designs on site. Bespoke festival signage was added to the exterior of the arena to complete the look.
