In this week’s blog we feature the work of good friend and long time collaborator with The Halo Group, Tristan Cochrane who recently designed and built an installation for Bombay Sapphire and advertising agency McCann. The project was part of the gin distiller’s festive marketing campaign. This behind the scenes feature explores some of the fascinating materials and processes he uses in his work.

Tristan Said:

“The client had a very specific and thorough visual identification brief which included amongst other things their brand colour schemes, a clean cut style and an attention to using real materials as often as possible.

I made the shelves from real marble. Budget constraints were overcome by glueing 2 marble tiles together and working with that as a material. This was a very, very delicate process as I had to cut, transport and fit the marble in a tight build window.
The edging of the shelves was constructed from solid copper bar (5mmx20mm) and brush polished to a satin finish. As copper oxidises very quickly I had to treat the material prior to use in a cleaning bath and then I sprayed the product with military grade lacquer to finish. The spray is used for stopping shells and firearms from rusting in storage. This delicate process meant that everything needed to be handled with plastic gloves for protective purposes.  The unit was very large, difficult to fit into a basement setting and with only a few mm of clearance in the ceiling there was no margin for error.  Every detail had to be thought through from start to finish about how to approach the installation whilst ensuring the design did not lose the overall impact.
The wood I used was white ash, which is the same as used in baseball bats as it is very stable even over the long and precise distances required for the frame. The shape of the wooden grid structure made the glueing process very challenging and all the jointed sections were angled connections and required special bracing for every joint.  Getting this right was quite a feat for a project of this scale.
The back box feature was sprayed for a perfect finish, and was quite a complicated size and surface to spray. The foliage dressing was made with real and faux botanicals including real juniper, dried lemon and orange, cinnamon and eucalyptus.
McCann and Bombay Sapphire were very happy with the end product and reported that sales were up 230% during the activation.

Architectural Interior Design

Last year saw the ambitious Nightclub Design project from Soho Garden, Dubai go on to win the prestigious Time Out – Music & Nightlife Award for “Best New Nightlife Venue”. The Halo Group was commissioned to design multiple different venues on the Meydan Racecourse site for the client and provided build services to their team to help realise our designs.

TIME OUT SAY:

“Best New Nightlife Venue: Soho Garden
What can we say about Soho Garden? Well, since this new club boldly smashed its way into town, the Dubai nightlife scene has changed. With three clubs in one, effectively, Soho Garden (the complex) hosts the eponymous club, Las Vegas pool party import Drai’s Dubai, and the enormous Soho Beach, with a 7,000-capacity arena for particularly massive gigs… In short, this place is a game-changer.”

Architectural Interior Design

The project was made possible by using The Halo Group’s modular structure build system which provided the infrastructure for much of the site. The system’s versatility enabled us to create the distinct look and feel featured in each zone to create a complex of unique event spaces.

Architectural Interior Design

When not using our temporary structure system, The Halo Group’s in-house design team helped create a series of striking event spaces to rival any nightclub design in Dubai. As an agency, we specialise in commercial interior design and architectural interior design for a wide range of venue, workspace, bar, restaurant and nightclub design projects. The Soho Garden commission utilised many of our core products and services to create this amazing end result.

CHISWICK HOUSE & GARDENS TO BE DRAMATICALLY TRANSFORMED INTO LONDON’S NEWEST AFTER DARK WINTER EXPERIENCE

World-renowned lighting designer and an illumination artist will transform the historic property and show it in a brand new ‘light’ against a bespoke musical backdrop.

CHISWICK House & Gardens Trust has announced the perfect winter experience: The inaugural After Dark at Chiswick House Gardens. Launching on Thursday 15th November until 30th December, and running from Thursday to Sunday, this will be a festive extravaganza like no other.

The perfect, pre-Christmas, adventure refuses to conform to the norm, as there’ll be no reindeers, fake snow or Santa Clauses in sight. Instead, vibrant state-of-the-art light displays from world-renowned artists offer a sleek, modern and classy experience providing stunning and unique picture content for snap-happy social media fans. All set in a breathtaking historical setting and with delicious food and drink aplenty, After Dark is perfect for the family, friends, office parties or partners looking to dial up their date night.

Visitors will be guided through a 45-minute trail set in the award-winning, opulent gardens of the 18th-century Chiswick House and Gardens. The historical villa will form the canvas for an illuminating lighting display where classical architecture meets modern technology, care of renowned lighting designer, Nick Gray from Renegade. Gray’s high-profile projects have included stage lighting for Kasabian, Last Shadow Puppets and Calvin Harris, and lighting design for many fashion shows including London Fashion Week, Anya Hindmarch, Mulberry, Julien Macdonald, Roksanda, Matthew Williamson and Temperley to name a few. Several art installations by up-and-coming artist Finn Thomson will also feature.

Upon completion of the trail, visitors can tuck into a seasonal feast where their culinary senses will be heightened as some of London’s best street food traders such as The Cheese Truck, Le Swine, Taco Dave, The Duck Shed and Love Churros will serve up mouth-watering dishes, with more to be announced. The Halo Group will be building 8 contemporary structures to house the street food vendors at After Dark. These bespoke modern units have been designed using our unique modular build system and will complement the events distinct identity.

They’ll be an abundance of winter toddy favourites such as Terry’s Hot Chocolate Orange, Bailey’s Hot Chocolate and Hot Apple Cider to help keep you warm from point of entry.

Jennifer Davidson, Event Director of After Dark said: “We’re excited to produce a very different outdoors, after dark show and thrilled to be shining a light on one of the country’s greatest treasures – reigniting London’s fascination with Chiswick House and Gardens & Trust.”

Chiswick House and Gardens Trust

Chiswick House is an 18th-century villa set in classically landscaped gardens in west London. One of the earliest and finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the UK, the house was designed from 1720-32 by Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, and his associate the painter, garden designer and architect, William Kent.

In the 18th century, informal landscaping was a revolution in design and a complete break from tradition. The creation of Chiswick Gardens marked the start of the English Landscape Movement and still today the Chiswick House and Gardens is continuing to break new ground by welcoming the After Dark concept. The illuminated trail transforms the beautiful natural parkland, giving visitors the chance to enjoy Chiswick in a whole new ‘light’.
